The season finale of The Problem With Jon Stewart is now streaming on Apple TV+, so we decided to go out with something light and noncontroversial: Race! Jon is joined by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and best-selling author Isabel Wilkerson to discuss race, racism, and America’s caste system. Jon Talks About the Media—And It Talks Back
Last week’s episode of our Apple TV+ series was all about the news media. So we invited Washington Post media columnist Margaret Sullivan to talk with Jon about the media sensationalism—and YOU WON’T BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENED NEXT! Actually, you will. They have a thoughtful discussion about the state of news media and if it can be improved. Jon is also joined by executive producer Brinda Adhikari and staff writer Henrik Blix, both of whom worked in news before escaping to the world of late night comedy. To watch our latest episode, visit https://theproblem.link/AppleTVCREDITSHosted by: Jon StewartFeaturing, in order of appearance: Henrik Blix, Brinda Adhikari, Margaret SullivanExecutive Produced by Jon Stewart, Brinda Adhikari, James Dixon, Chris McShane, and Richard Plepler.Lead Producer: Sophie EricksonProducers: Caity Gray, Robby SlowikAssoc. Jon Talks Climate Change: It Gets Heated
We don’t want to send the message that criticizing us on Twitter is a ticket to the podcast...but that’s what climate reporter Kendra Pierre-Louis did, and now here she is. Kendra had some issues with our climate episode on Apple TV+, so Jon invited her on for a conversation. And just like our planet, things heated up—insofar as you can call a thoughtful exchange of ideas “heated up.” Jon is also joined by writers Rob Christensen and Tocarra Mallard to talk about Twitter trolls, beard maintenance, and the importance of a steady government job.Jon recorded this episode away from the studio, so if it sounds like he’s talking into a paper cup tied to a string it’s because he actually might be. Please excuse the sound issues. What did you think of our episode? Reporter Called Jon Out, So We Called Him Up
Last week’s episode of our Apple TV+ show took on the stock market, GameStop, and the Robinhood app. Spencer Jakab, an editor with The Wall Street Journal, took to Twitter to vent his disagreements with it. So we invited him on the podcast (we’re gluttons for punishment) to talk it out. Jon is also joined by writers Kris Acimovic and Kasaun Wilson to talk about rising gas prices and why comedy clubs are the only landmarks comedians know. What did you think of our episode? A Conversation With Adam McKay
Jon welcomes his pal Adam McKay to discuss climate change and his film Don’t Look Up…and they barely do either. But! They do take a long stroll down comedy memory lane. From Adam’s start as a Philly stand-up, to his time with SNL and hits like Anchorman, to producing and directing Oscar®-nominated films, Adam’s fingerprints are all over 21st-century comedy. We want to hear from you! Jon Talks Stocks and Ukraine
We’re back on Apple TV+ with brand-new episode “The Problem With Stocks,” and we’re celebrating on the podcast the only way we know how—by interviewing former SEC commissioner Rob Jackson. (We’re bad at celebrating.) We get his thoughts on why the market isn’t held accountable and is less regulated than casinos. Robby Slowik and Rob Christensen join Jon to give their thoughts on the Russian invasion of Ukraine and how Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy went from comedian to courageous leader. Not to mention their recommendations for the cleanest restrooms in New York City.Words in this episode you may not know but should know:Arbitrage is exploiting a price difference of the same asset. It’s like buying avocados at the supermarket for $1 each and selling them at the hipster farmers market for double.Dark pools are private exchanges for trading securities that are not accessible by the investing public.Options trading is buying and selling of options, which are essentially contracts that give you the right to buy or sell a stock at a certain price by a certain date. It’s basically betting on a stock price going up or down. So if you purchase an option instead of buying a stock, it means that you are buying the option to buy a stock if it hits a certain price. This can lead to issues, because if your bet fails, you’ve lost all that you’ve invested. Whereas if you bought actual stocks, regardless of the price, you still own that asset.Payment for order flow (PFOF) is when brokerages such as Robinhood route the buy and sell orders of retail investors to big market makers such as Citadel and Virtu instead of sending it directly to the stock market. This deal helps brokerages make hundreds of millions of dollars every year.Retail investors are individual, nonprofessional investors who are buying assets with their own money.Securities are any tradable financial asset: stock share (equities), bonds, investment funds, pensions, etc.The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) oversees securities exchanges, brokers, investment advisors, and mutual funds to create fair dealings, disclose important market information, and prevent fraud.Bildungsroman isn’t relevant to our episode, but do you remember that from English class? Jon Referees an Economist Battle
When economist and Fed exec Thomas Hoenig told Jon on this podcast that printing money was a bad idea, economists Stephanie Kelton and Rohan Grey took to the internet to start an Economist Battle (it’s more fun than it sounds). Now they’re here to tell Jon about a new approach to economics called Modern Monetary Theory, and why printing money maybe isn’t so bad after all. But first, Jon discusses trespassing bears and the current situation in Ukraine with staff members Tocarra Mallard, Alexa Loftus, and Deniz Cam.CREDITSHosted by: Jon StewartFeaturing, in order of appearance: Alexa Loftus Tocarra Mallard, Deniz Cam, Stephanie Kelton, Rohan Grey, Rob ChristensenExecutive Produced by Jon Stewart, Brinda Adhikari, James Dixon, Chris McShane, and Richard Plepler.Lead Producer: Sophie EricksonProducers: Caity Gray, Robby SlowikAssoc. Well, Jon has gone and stepped in it again! So this week, along with writers Jay Jurden and Kris Acimovic, Jon is joined by Harvard professor and misinformation expert Dr. Joan Donovan to discuss RoganGate and how to combat misinformation. Jon Goes Down the QAnon Rabbit Hole With Gabriel Gatehouse
Jon talks with (very charming, very British) BBC foreign correspondent Gabriel Gatehouse about his work covering the U.S. elections—which turned into reporting on QAnon, because what’s an election without a global cabal of blood-drinking billionaires? Jon is also joined by writers Kris Acimovic and Robby Slowik to discuss their favorite conspiracy theories, and maybe start some new ones.CREDITSHosted by: Jon StewartFeaturing, in order of appearance: Kris Acimovic, Robby Slowik, Gabriel Gatehouse, Jay JurdenExecutive Produced by Jon Stewart, Brinda Adhikari, James Dixon, Chris McShane, and Richard Plepler.Lead Producer: Sophie EricksonProducers: Caity Gray, Robby SlowikAssoc. You've probably heard that inflation is getting worse—and not just from your grandpa who remembers when soda cost a nickel and movies were movies. Jon talks with Thomas Hoenig, former president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, about how the Fed has destroyed everything we hold dear.
